The Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs, Elissa Slotkin: We fully support Georgia’s aspirations to NATO

The Acting Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs, Elissa Slotkin congratulated the Georgian people on the Day of Independence at an official reception held to mark the 25th anniversary of the restoration of Georgia’s independence in Washington, on 8 June 2016.

According to Elissa Slotkin, Georgia has emerged as a free, sovereign and democratic country over these years. “The United States is proud to support Georgia to achieve that goal. The US also proud of the strong partnership we have had with Georgia over the past 14 years. Georgia has been a steadfast partner in Iraq and Afghanistan”.

Elissa Slotkin said the U.S. honours the sacrifice of those Georgians who were killed in action for the strengthening of global peace and stability.

According to the Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs, the United States of America fully supports Georgia’s aspirations to NATO and continues to work „to strengthen Georgian armed forces and key defense reforms”.

The reception dedicated to Georgia’s independence restoration was hosted by the Embassy of Georgia in the U.S. and was attended by nearly 900 invited guests.  Ambassador of Georgia in the United State Archil Gegeshidze, together with the Minister of Foreign Affairs Mikheil Janelidze and Minister of Defence Tinatin Khidasheli, opened up the official part of the celebration. Honorary guests: U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Tony Blinken, Acting Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs Elissa Slotkin, and Administrator of the USAID Gayle Smith have also addressed the audience.
